Bypoll Results Today: Congress candidate wins Anta bypoll, BJP’s Devyani Rana wins Nagrota

Bihar will also see counting today, where the ruling NDA and the opposition Mahagathbandhan are engaged in a tough battle.

The vote counting for the recent Assembly by-elections shows a mixed picture, with both the BJP and Congress scoring important wins. Congress secured two key victories. In Rajasthan’s Anta seat, Pramod Jain “Bhaya” won with 69,571 votes, defeating BJP’s Morpal Suman and Independent candidate Naresh Meena by 15,612 votes. The party also won the Jubilee Hills by-election in Telangana, where Naveen Yadav emerged victorious.

The BJP also performed strongly in two regions. In Nagrota, Jammu & Kashmir, Devyani Rana won by a huge margin of 24,647 votes. In Odisha’s Nuapada seat, BJP candidate Jay Dholakia recorded an impressive lead of 82,911 votes.

In Jammu and Kashmir, voting was held in Budgam after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chose to keep the Ganderbal seat, which he also won in 2024. The key candidates in Budgam are Aga Syed Mehmood from the ruling National Conference and Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi from Mehbooba Mufti’s PDP. The Nagrota seat in J&K became vacant after BJP MLA Devender Singh Rana passed away last year. The main contest there is between BJP’s Devyani Rana, Shamim Begum from the National Conference, and Harsh Dev Singh from the J&K National Panthers Party.

Regional parties also showed strong performances in their home regions. In Jammu & Kashmir’s Budgam seat, the PDP won a major victory, with Muntazir Mehdi securing 21,576 votes. He defeated the National Conference candidate and an independent by 4,478 votes. The BJP candidate, Mohsin Mosvi, came in sixth with just 2,619 votes.

AAP Successfully Defends Tarn Taran Seat in Punjab By-Poll

In Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also defended the Tarn Taran Assembly seat in the by-election, maintaining its hold in the state.

In Rajasthan’s Baran district, a bypoll was held in the Anta constituency after BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena was disqualified following a conviction in a 2005 case. The contest is now between Pramod Jai Bhaya of the Congress and Morpal Suman of the BJP.

Jharkhand’s Ghatshila seat features a high-profile fight between Babulal Soren, son of former BJP Chief Minister Champai Soren, and Mahagathbandhan candidate Somesh Chandra Soren.

PDP captured Assembly constituency for the first time

In a landmark political development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has captured the Budgam Assembly constituency for the first time, breaking the National Conference’s decades-long dominance in the central Kashmir bastion.

PDP’s Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi secured victory by a margin of 4,496 votes, marking a historic breakthrough for the party that had previously failed to make electoral inroads in Budgam.

The by-election was held after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah vacated the seat, opting to retain Ganderbal, which he also won in last year’s Assembly polls. Despite Budgam’s status as a traditional NC stronghold—represented for decades by influential members of the Aga family—the party’s campaign this time appeared subdued.

Political observers pointed to the absence of senior NC leader and MP Aga Syed Ruhulla Mehdi from the campaign as a key factor behind the party’s underperformance. His lack of involvement, they noted, likely caused a split in the NC’s traditional vote bank, paving the way for PDP’s win.

For the PDP, the victory represents a significant political milestone. The party, which previously held three seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, now expands its presence to four—bolstering its voice in the House.

Budgam had long remained elusive for NC. In the 2024 Assembly elections, Omar Abdullah defeated Muntazir Mehdi by over 18,000 votes, while in 2014, 2008, and 2002, NC’s Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi won consecutively. Earlier, in 1996, NC’s Syed Ghulam Hussain Geelani claimed the seat.
