As per a Telegraph report, Additional Superintendent of Police Tejpal Singh stated that the bus was transporting labourers from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh to a brick kiln in Manoharpur. He explained that gas cylinders and other household items placed on top of the bus came into contact with a high-tension wire while the vehicle was passing along an internal unpaved road near a village in Manoharpur. The contact with the live wire caused the bus to catch fire.
