New Delhi: Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati Sunday said the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) should be brought in the nation but opposed the ‘forceful’ way the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to implement it.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister clarified her party’s stand on the uniform civil code and said, “Our party (BSP) is not against the implementation of UCC but we do not support the way BJP is trying to implement Uniform Civil Code in the country. It is not right to politicise this issue and forcefully implement UCC in the country.”

“The implementation of UCC will strengthen the country and unite Indians. It will also develop a sense of brotherhood among people. The forceful implementation of UCC is not right, politicising this issue will create problems,” said the national president of BSP.

However, she adviced that the central government should currently focus on issues like inflation, unemployment, education and healthcare.

Mayawati’s remark came a day ahead of a crucial meeting to be held by the parliamentary standing committee regarding the implementation of the UCC.

The panel has invited representatives of the Law Commission and the law ministry seeking views of stakeholders on the issue of UCC.

Earlier the Prime Minister made a strong pitch on why the UCC should be implemented and claimed that Muslims are being instigated over the sensitive issue.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
