Nearly two decades after the devastating terror attack that shattered Mumbai’s Western Railway, claiming over 180 lives and injuring countless others, a verdict has been delivered. Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak, forming a special bench, concluded that the prosecution’s evidence wasn’t strong enough to convict the accused.

“The prosecution has utterly failed to prove the case against the accused. It is hard to believe that the accused committed the crime. Hence, their conviction is quashed and set aside,” the HC said.

In 2015, a special court found 12 individuals guilty in the case. Five received death sentences, while the other seven were sentenced to life imprisonment. Following the High Court’s ruling on Monday, the convicts, appearing via video conference from different jails across the state, expressed gratitude to their legal team.On July 11, 2006, seven explosions tore through Mumbai’s local trains at multiple points along the western line, claiming over 180 lives and leaving many others injured.
