‘BJP Would Have Lost Even…’, Akhilesh Yadav On Why BJP Lost Ayodhya Seat

The BJP's loss in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad, where the Ram Mandir stands, just months after its consecration in Ayodhya, is seen as a big setback for the party this election season.

The BJP’s defeat in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad constituency, home to the Ram Mandir, shortly after the temple’s consecration in Ayodhya, is perceived as a significant setback for the party this election season.

BJP’s Lallu Singh, who had held the Faizabad MP seat since 2014, lost to Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad by a margin of over 54,000 votes.

One of the key election promises for the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election was the building of the temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya.

Following the Samajwadi Party’s triumph and the BJP’s defeat in Faizabad, party leader Akhilesh Yadav remarked that the BJP would have suffered even greater losses in Uttar Pradesh. He cited allegations of the BJP seizing land from the impoverished and using it for a sacred project.

‘The truth is that the BJP would have lost even more seats in Uttar Pradesh. I thank the people of Ayodhya. You would have seen the pain of Ayodhya from time to time. They (people) were not given adequate compensation for their land, injustice was done to them, their land was not acquired at par with the market price, you snatched their land forcibly by slapping false cases against them…you destroyed the poor for a sacred woork. That is why I think people of Ayodhya and neighbouring areas voted against the BJP,’ Akhilesh Yadav said.

Notably, the BJP’s defeat in Faizabad, known for its grand temple, aligned with their loss in Shravasti, a Lok Sabha constituency situated 100 kilometers apart.

Adding to the BJP’s woes, SP’s Ram Shiromani Verma emerged victorious over BJP’s Saket Misra, son of Nripendra Misra, the bureaucrat leading the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Temple.

A Shift Towards BJP's Aggressive Hindutva Amid Opposition's Leadership Crisis

The Maharashtra election may further push the Congress down as it has lost the election at a time when it needed a win most desperately. Though the Congress succeeded in pushing the BJP to a corner and stopping it at less than a majority on its own, it failed to make any headway further.
