BJP MLA Ketki Singh on Monday demanded that Ghazipur be renamed after Seer Parshuram’s father, Mahrishi Gautam. The lawmaker said she has written a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in this regard.
According to PTI, Singh said that such names should be removed as it reminds people of their times of disgrace as it glorifies invaders. While talking to media persons , she said, “I want the Ghazipur district’s name to be changed.”
“Changing the name will inspire the coming generation. How can a country that forgets its history build its future? If you forget your origin, you will never be able to build a future,” news agency PTI quoted her as saying.
Earlier, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister and BJP leader Uma Bharti has demanded renaming the Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh after a freedom fighter or cultural icon, accusing the opposition of backing “names from the era of slavery” out of vote greed.
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Bharti said, “This is the wish of the people… The city should be named after a freedom fighter, a saint or a legend who worked for cultural awakening. They (opposition) don’t have anything in them apart from the greed of the vote, otherwise they wouldn’t support a name from the era of slavery,” she added.
