Bihar attempt to rape case

In a shocking incident in Samastipur, Bihar, a nurse stopped an attempt to gang-rape her at a private hospital, thereby injuring the assaulter, who was also the hospital administrator. This incident was reportedly at the RBS Health Care Centre in Gangapur which occurred on Wednesday night exactly a month after the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor shook the country’s conscience in Kolkata. The daring escape of the nurse alerted the police and foiled the crime.

Nurse Escapes After Attacker’s Assault
The 25-year-old nurse narrated that she was just finishing her shift at the hospital when Dr. Sanjay Kumar, administrator of the concerned hospital, who went with two of his associates, entered her place to rape her. She also said all the accused were intoxicated during the time of the attack. Finding it an opportunity to save herself, the victim drove a blade into the genitals of Dr. Kumar and fled the hospital. She escaped from there and called the police.

Police Response and Arrests

DSP Sanjay Kumar Pandey praised the courage and alertness of the nurse. A police team was dispatched immediately to the hospital, where the police ensured the safety of the nurse, and arrested the three accused men including Dr. Kumar. The other two accused were identified as Sunil Kumar Gupta and Awadhesh Kumar.

The men had locked the hospital from the inside and also switched off the CCTV cameras before carrying out the assault. The police recovered vital pieces of evidence during investigation, which included a bottle of liquor, the blade used by the nurse, blood-stained clothes, and three mobile phones. Officials lauded the bravery of the nurse while in danger.

Drunken State And Legal Action
The police said that all three accused were drunken to a high degree when the attack was made. Bihar is a dry state and the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol is banned. Besides the charges of attempt to rape, the accused would also be booked under the prohibition laws of the state. A case has been registered against the trio based on the statement of the victim.

Prohibition Laws Enforced
Prohibition laws have been in force in Bihar since April 2016. Despite stringent rules, this kind of violation keeps cropping up. Recoveries of alcohol from the hospital premises added another degree of criminality to the incident. The case brought to the fore the continuity of the problem with alcohol misuse despite the state ban.

Praise For The Bravery Of The Nurse
DSP Pandey pointed out that the timely alertness of the nurse saved her from further harm. At the time this happened, India was still trying to come out of the traumatic shocks of similar incidents of rape and brutality against women. This incident once again brought home to the people that more drastic measures are still needed for granting security to women at least at their workplaces.

The injured doctor is receiving treatment at a hospital, and the investigation is underway. Police action in this regard is commendable, and the authorities assure that the law will take its course.
