Bihar Elections 2025: As the counting for the Bihar Assembly election nears its end and the trends show strong numbers for the NDA, the focus has now shifted to what comes next for the alliance. With both the BJP and JD(U) performing well, and to say the BJP is currently a little ahead of the JDU, the big question is whether the NDA will choose Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister once again.
Bihar Assembly Election 2025 Trends
Nitish Kumar’s JDU and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made the NDA gain a massive lead in trends. The front has put up an unbeatable performance against the Mahagathbandhan in the 2025 Bihar assembly elections. The Janata Dal (United) was leading in 80 seats and the BJP was leading in 91 seats as per the Election Commission’s trends till 2 pm on Friday.
Bihar Assembly Election 2025 – NDA
The National Democratic Alliance – comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Janata Dal (United), primarily, along with the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha – was well above the majority mark of 122 seats, as per the trends till noon.
Will Nitish Kumar get another term as CM?
The rising numbers showing that the NDA may come back to power in Bihar have started a discussion about whether Nitish Kumar will become the chief minister again. If he does, it will add another term to his 20-year rule in the state. With both the BJP and JD(U) performing well, the big question is whether the NDA will choose Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister once again.
However, Nitish Kumar didn’t emerge as the preferred chief minister in the pollsters’ survey. Axis My India found that 34% of people wanted Tejashwi Yadav to be the chief minister, while only 22% chose Nitish Kumar. Another survey by People’s Pulse showed that 32% preferred Tejashwi and 30% supported Nitish.
There are also reports that if BJP gain more numbers than the JDU, it could lead the BJP to claim the CM seat.
‘Big Brother’ Dynamic
The NDA fought on equal footing (BJP and JD(U) each contesting 101 seats), but the BJP’s superior performance—projected at 90+ seats—has sparked talk of it claiming the “big brother” status and the CM post. If the number increases for BJP, the party can also think of other options.
Nitish, Bihar, & Modi’s Centre
Experts also believe that Nitish Kumar’s importance for the BJP is going to increase. The JD(U)’s 12 MPs already support Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA government in Delhi. Their value will become even greater if the NDA strengthens its position in Bihar, which will also increase its influence at the Centre.
