Sahara Group Founder Subrata Roy Dies At 75

Sahara Group founder Subrata Roy died at the age of 75 in Mumbai after prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Subrata Roy, the founder of Sahara Pariwar, died on November 14 after a prolonged illness. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Mumbai.

In its statement, the Sahara Group writes “It is with profound sadness that Sahara India Pariwar informs the demise of our Hon’ble ‘Saharasri’ Subrata Roy Sahara, Managing Worker and Chairman, Sahara India Pariwar.
Saharasri ji an inspirational leader and visionary, passed away on 14th November 2023 at 10.30 pm due to cardiorespiratory arrest following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on 12th November, 2023 following a decline in health.”

Being born on June 10, 1948, in Araria in an influential zamindar family, he founded the giant Sahara India Pariwar in 1978. The business tycoon was popularly known as Sahara Shree.

In 2004, Roy’s Sahara Group was termed as the ‘second largest employer of India’ after railways by the renowned TIME magazine.

He spent his childhood studying at Holy Child Institute in Kolkata and later pursued mechanical engineering at the Government Technical Institute, Gorakhpur (now MMMUT). He started his career with his first business in the same city, Gorakhpur.

Roy joined Sahara Finance in 1976 when it was a struggling company. He later took it over and changed its financial model in 1978, and in the 1990s it turned into one of the biggest conglomerates of India after spreading its wings into diversified sectors like education, real estate, entertainment, media, healthcare, tourism, and hospitality.

In 2000, Sahara TV was launched which was later renamed Sahara One. In 2003, Sahara started three weeklies: Sahara Time (English), Sahara Samay (Hindi), and Sahara Aalmi (Urdu).

Subrata Roy was also counted on for his humanitarian efforts as the likes of flood-hit Uttarakhand in 2013 or scholarships to students of lower-middle classes. He was also praised by the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for providing financial support to 127 families of martyrs in the Kargil War.
