Bhutan’s King Wangchuck meets PM Modi, discussed bilateral issues

New Delhi: Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, the third King of Bhutan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Tuesday. Both leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations in many areas including economic cooperation.

Wangchuk’s visit comes at a time when Bhutan’s PM last week described Doklam as a three-nation disputed area. On this, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said that the Government of India is closely monitoring all issues and situations related to the national interest.

We will take every necessary step for their safety. India and Bhutan will continue to work together for all common interests, including security interests, Foreign Secretary added.

On Monday, the Bhutanese King was received at the airport by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Jaishankar had said that Wangchuk’s visit would further strengthen the ties between India and Bhutan. Wangchuk had also met NSA Ajit Doval. He paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by reaching Rajghat.

The King of Bhutan also reached Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday evening to meet President Draupadi Murmu.
