In Bhopal, an interesting case came up where a 22-year-old man was inspired by the Bollywood movie ‘Dream Girl’, he mirrored the plot of the movie and tricked numerous people by pretending to be a woman online. Ashu Mehra or Chotu Mehra allegedly manipulated his voice like a woman and seduced his victims into forking over money.
Ajay was apprehended following a police complaint filed by one of his victims from Bhopal, Aman Namdev, on Tuesday, June 4. According to Namdev’s statement to the police, he had established an online friendship with a woman named Shivani Raghuvanshi via Instagram. Despite never meeting in person, Shivani allegedly pressured Namdev into marriage. When he declined, she purportedly threatened suicide. Subsequently, a man identifying himself as Shivani’s “Guru bhai (brother)”, named Ashu Mehra, approached Namdev, claiming that Shivani had attempted suicide and required financial assistance for treatment. Out of concern, Namdev admitted to transferring ₹ 70,000 to Ashu.
On investigation, police found that Ashu Mehra was behind the scam. He confessed that he was inspired by the movie ‘Dream Girl’ where a lead actor secured a job by portraying himself as a woman and speak in a woman’s voice. He also created many fake social media accounts in the name of females. Accused got dozens of victims and forked money from them.

The case once again highlights the consequence of social media scams and blackmail victims for money. Police urged people to be aware and if they notice something suspicious they can file a complaint in the nearest police station.
