New Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday refused to entertain a curative petition filed by the Centre that sought to reopen the settlement with the Union Carbide Corporation (now Dow Chemicals) to claim additional compensation for victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

The Centre further mentioned that the settlement can be kept aside only on the grounds of fraud. However, the central government has not pleaded any ground of fraud.

Dismissing the pla, the top court asked the Centre to utilise the money kept with the RBI to satisy the claims. It was mentioned that the RBI has an amount of Rs 50 Crores for allocate the pending claims to the victims of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

A bench consisting of Justice S.K. Kaul, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice A.S. Oka, Justice Vikram Nath and Justice J.K. Maheshwari said that there is no legal principles in the Centre’s plea.

The same had reserved the judgement in the matter on January 12, 2023.

The incident of 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy had claimed over 3,000 lives while causing a serious damage to the environment.
