The Maha Kumbh in in Prayagraj is one of the world’s largest gatherings and has become an important symbol of faith and devotion. According to officials, over the past month, approximately 440 million pilgrims have visited the Maha Kumbh grounds, which cover a radius of four thousand hectares along the banks of the Sangam.
Among them, the Mahakumbh journey holds an even more unique significance for 12 women and their families, who gave birth at the Kumbh Central Hospital set up at the venue.
On Sunday night, the 12th baby—a boy—was born at Central Hospital in the Maha Kumbh area. All deliveries were normal, according to Dr. Manoj Kaushik, the chief medical superintendent of the hospital.
Neha Singh, from Sarai Chandi, Phulpur, went into labor on Sunday and was rushed to the hospital. Her husband Deepak, insisted on naming his son Kumbh.
However, one baby had already been named Kumbh, born on December 29. To differentiate, the hospital staff suggested he could be named Kumbh-2.
“I will name my son Kumbh, even if the hospital doesn’t, as he was born during this Maha Kumbh,” Deepak said to reporters. His mother was already at the site, observing ‘kalpavas’—a month of austerity and spiritualism. All the babies have been named after symbols of faith—Bholenath, Bajrangi, Nandi, Jamuna, and so on.
On February 3, Basant Panchami, two babies were born—one boy and one girl. One was named Basant, and the other, Basanti. Mothers from beyond Uttar Pradesh have also given birth here—families from Barabanki, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, as well as from Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
Some mothers are the wives of grade-four employees, while others are from groups that have come from various states for the pilgrimage.
A woman from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, went into labor while taking a bath at the ghat. She was quickly taken to the hospital by ambulance, and her family named the daughter Saraswati.
Central Hospital is one of the 13 medical units established for the convenience of devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13 and will run until February 26. Pilgrims began arriving as early as December 2024.
The first birth at the hospital took place on December 29 when Sonam from Kaushambi delivered a boy named Kumbh. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak congratulated the family on the occasion.
