Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP, and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke on Hindu spirituality and how it shapes his political thinking before an event organized at the University of Texas in Dallas on September 8, 2024,. The event was part of a three-day trip by Gandhi to the United States with the aim of strengthening ties between India and the United States.

Spirituality and Transparency In Leadership

Gandhi reflects on how Hindu spiritual ideas have influenced his thinking on issues of leadership and politics. He invokes the notion of ‘Devta’, deity, as a way to unpack how he came to believe in transparency within leadership. To Gandhi, a ‘Devta’ is a person in whom inner and outer feelings do not differ. If somebody comes and tells me all that he believes in or thinks about and can express all that openly-that’s my definition of a ‘Devta.’ This concept describes the openness of a leader. Insights by Indian Business Leaders.

He explained that more often, Indian leaders differ with themselves and undergo deep introspection rather than merely differing with others. He spoke of Gautam Buddha, Lord Ram, and Mahatma Gandhi: all had to overcome their personal fears and ambitions in order to understand others. ‘To me, that’s Indian politics that’s the heart of Indian politics, and that’s what defines an Indian leader,’ said Gandhi.

Personal Transformation Through Bharat Jodo Yatra

Gandhi reflected on personal experiences when discussing how a months-long march across India, the Bharat Jodo Yatra, transformed him. Even though he was plagued with problems regarding his knees, he termed the yatra as ‘an attack on myself.’ According to him, the Yatra taught him an idea of developing new thinking and creating an attachment to the people. First 3-4 days, I was thinking, ‘What I have done?’

The Concept of Lord Shiva And Indian Politics

Gandhi related the transformation of Yatra to the ideal of Lord Shiva, who destroys his ego and build belief structure-to see something new. He explained, ‘You know the idea of Shiva-when they say Shiva is the destroyer-what is he destroying? He’s destroying his ego, his structure, his beliefs. So, Indian political thought and action are all about going inside’

Introducing ‘Love’ Into Indian Politics

Gandhi added that though Bharat Jodo Yatra was an unparalleled success, it brought a new element into Indian politics that is love. ‘We introduced certainly for the first time in India, possibly for the first time in many countries, an idea called ‘love’ into politics.’ This new element, he said, has altered the way of politicking and communications.

Future Engagement And Debate

He would have deliberations at Georgetown University and would meet the members of the US Congress when he visits between September 8-10. According to Sam Pitroda, chief of the Indian Overseas Congress, it is an opportunity for Gandhi to visit on a personal level, not in an official capacity.
