The parents of two Indian women, who reportedly passed away following Covishield vaccination, plan to sue the Serum Institute of India (SII). This decision comes in the wake of AstraZeneca’s acknowledgment in court that its vaccine, distributed as Covishield in India, can lead to uncommon side effects such as blood clots. Encouraged by this admission, the parents are optimistic about achieving justice.
The pharmaceutical company is facing a class-action lawsuit alleging that its COVID-19 vaccine, developed in partnership with the University of Oxford, resulted in fatalities and severe injuries. Among these claims is the occurrence of TTS (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome), a significant adverse event characterized by blood clots and reduced blood platelet levels.
AstraZeneca, the British pharmaceutical company, has acknowledged in court documents that its COVID-19 vaccine carries the risk of causing TTS (thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome).
The Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was marketed worldwide under various brand names, including ‘Covishield’ and ‘Vaxzevria’, among others.
Rithaika Sri Omtri, an 18-year-old who had recently finished Class 12 and was studying architecture, received her first dose of Covishield in May, accompanied by her parents. However, within a week, she experienced a high fever, vomiting, and difficulty walking. Subsequent MRI scans revealed multiple blood clots and a hemorrhage in her brain. Tragically, Rithaika passed away within two weeks of experiencing these symptoms.

At the time of Rithaika’s passing, her parents were unaware of the precise cause of her death. However, after filing two Right to Information (RTI) requests, in December, the Union health ministry confirmed that Rithaika had succumbed to “thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome” and that her death was attributed to a “vaccine product-related reaction.”
In a parallel occurrence, Venugopal Govindan’s daughter, Karunya, also passed away in July 2021, approximately a month after receiving her vaccination. Despite the investigation by the national committee, it was determined that there was inadequate evidence to ascertain that her demise was directly linked to the vaccine.
Numerous families, via their court complaints, have asserted that the side effects of the AstraZeneca vaccine have resulted in catastrophic consequences.
Jamie Scott, who sustained a permanent brain injury following her receipt of the AstraZeneca vaccine in April 2021, initiated the lawsuit. Due to safety concerns, the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is no longer administered in the UK. Although independent studies have validated its effectiveness in fighting the pandemic, the emergence of rare side effects has prompted regulatory scrutiny and legal action. As legal proceedings progress, affected individuals and their families are pursuing fair compensation and recognition of vaccine-induced injuries.
