A tragic incident at Bengaluru’s Kengeri Metro Station on Friday morning led to the death of a 38 year old man after he jumped in front of an oncoming metro train. The man, identified as Shantagoud Police Patil from Vijayapura district, is believed to have deliberately stepped onto the tracks just as the train was entering the platform.
The incident occurred around 8:15 am and created panic among early morning commuters. Metro staff and emergency teams rushed to the spot immediately, but the man had died on the scene due to severe injuries. His body was later removed from the tracks after preliminary on-site procedures.
Purple line services hit, commuters face major delays
Following the incident, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) suspended services between Mysore Road and Challaghatta on the Purple Line. Trains ran only up to Mysore Road station for nearly an hour and a half, causing heavy delays and crowding.
Many office-goers were left stranded and had to depend on alternative transport like buses, autorickshaws and cabs. Full services on the Purple Line were restored around 9:40 am after authorities completed safety checks and cleared the tracks.
Police officials have begun an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage to understand what led to the man’s actions. The case has been registered as an unnatural death.
Incident raises safety concerns at metro stations
The tragic episode has once again raised questions about safety mechanisms at metro stations. Experts and commuters have urged for preventive measures such as platform screen doors, additional surveillance and quicker mental-health intervention systems.
Authorities have appealed to the public to seek help if experiencing distress and reminded that helplines are available for those struggling with mental-health challenges.
