Karnataka BJP MLA RR Munirathna walked out of Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru on Wednesday after being incarcerated for a month. His release followed a court order related to a rape case filed by a 40-year-old woman.
Charges Under IPC and Atrocities Act
Munirathna faces multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rape, sexual harassment, voyeurism, criminal intimidation, extortion, promoting enmity, and insulting a woman’s modesty. He is also charged under sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Court Conditions and Bail Approval
The MLA had earlier secured bail in the atrocity case and anticipatory bail for criminal intimidation. The Special Court for MP/MLAs has instructed him to cooperate with investigators, remain within the court’s jurisdiction unless permitted to leave, and avoid threatening witnesses or tampering with evidence.
Ongoing Investigation by SIT
Munirathna was remanded in judicial custody following interrogation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT is probing three cases against him, with two filed at the Vyalikaval police station in Bengaluru and one at the Kaggalipura police station in Ramanagara. The investigation remains ongoing under the supervision of the court.
