Bengaluru: With an aim to alleviate traffic congestion in the state which is also known as the Silicon Valley of India – Bengaluru, the BDA will be removing two existing loops on the Hebbal flyover, as per officials.
The loops catering to vehicles from KR Pura and those from Tumakuru Road and the Ballari Road service lane heading towards Mehkri Circle will be dismantled. An additional 750-metre-long lane will extend from Baptist Hospital to a road adjacent to the tree park at the busy junction. Construction of a new ramp from the Baptist Hospital side commenced in 2023, with several pillars already erected along the service road. As work progresses towards the northern section of the junction, experts anticipate the need to remove the two loops to accommodate the new lane, aiming to facilitate smoother traffic flow from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to Mehkri Circle.

A BDA official stated, “This Rs 90 crore project requires the removal of the existing loops.” Traffic police will be consulted considering the area’s traffic volume. An alternative 150-metre-long loop will be constructed for vehicles from KR Pura, merging with the new lane after the rail track, for those headed towards Mehkri Circle.
The removal of two spans where the KR Pura ramp links with the main lines of the flyover is currently underway. Traffic police have limited access to the ramp, allowing only two-wheelers. Other vehicles are instructed to turn right beneath the flyover, execute a U-turn before the Kodigehalli signal, and utilize the service road to continue towards Mehkri Circle.
BDA estimates a requirement of Rs 300 crore for additional works aimed at easing congestion at this critical junction. Previous proposals included constructing a flyover for KR Pura-bound vehicles heading towards the airport and introducing new loops for vehicles from various directions to streamline traffic movement. A loop has been proposed for motorists from Tumakuru Road side by merging it with the new ramp, and another flyover was proposed for vehicles from Tumakuru heading towards the airport. The BDA had considered seeking assistance from other civic agencies due to financial constraints, with decisions to be made by the state government regarding future flyover expansions.
