West Bengal police registered a criminal case against actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty on Tuesday over remarks made during a speech on October 27. The complaint, filed by Kaushik Saha, a resident of Salt Lake, alleges that Chakraborty incited violence and promoted communal hatred in his speech, which was broadcasted by several news channels.
Charges Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The police registered the case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 192 (provocation to cause a riot) and Section 196 (promoting enmity between groups). The speech, delivered at a BJP event where Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the party’s membership drive, reportedly contained remarks directed at the Trinamool Congress (TMC), echoing a previous communal statement made by a TMC leader.
BJP Defends Chakraborty, Dismisses Allegations
BJP’s Bengal unit president, Sukanta Majumdar, dismissed the charges as “baseless,” suggesting the case is politically motivated. Majumdar pointed out that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not congratulate Chakraborty for his Dadasaheb Phalke Award, remarking, “Now she is honouring him by filing a case.”

TMC Criticizes Chakraborty’s Political Role
TMC state vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar criticized Chakraborty’s political involvement, calling him a “great actor and the worst politician.” He suggested that the actor’s use of dramatic language from movies in political speeches was inappropriate, saying, “What he did is shameful.”
Chakraborty has not yet responded to the allegations, and the case highlights the escalating political tensions between BJP and TMC in West Bengal.
