Two accused in the Bahraich violence, Sarfaraz and Faheem, were injured in a police encounter on Thursday as they attempted to flee to Nepal. The encounter occurred near the Handa Basehri area of Bahraich, close to the Nepal border. Both were injured in their legs during the incident, and five other people were arrested.
Incident Background: Durga Puja Procession Violence
The violence in Bahraich occurred on October 13 during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra. The violence was triggered by a dispute over the playing of music during the procession. As the procession passed through the Mahsi sub-division, clashes broke out with stones being thrown and gunfire exchanged, leading to Mishra’s death and several others being injured.

Police Action and Investigation
Sarfaraz and Faheem, sons of Abdul Hameed, the main accused in the case, have been referred to the district hospital for treatment. The police are continuing their investigation, and senior officials, including the Director General (DG) and Additional Director General (ADG) of Law & Order, are holding a meeting at the UP Police Headquarters.
Family’s Demand for Justice
Following the incident, Ram Gopal Mishra’s family met with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow, along with BJP MLA Sureshvar Singh, to demand strict action against the accused.
