In a latest move, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has imposed temporary fare caps across several key routes. This was after passengers reported sharp increases in ticket prices during IndiGo’s ongoing operational meltdown. Ministry’s intervention comes as India’s largest airline continues to face severe disruptions, leaving thousands of travellers stranded nationwide. Uncertainty continues over when these disruptions will finally end. Social media has been flooded with the chaos and the plight that the passengers are going through due to flight interruptions.
What the Ministry of Civil Aviation stated
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has invoked its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares across all affected routes, aiming to protect passengers from any form of opportunistic pricing. This action follows concerns over unusual airfare hikes by certain airlines. The Ministry has issued an official directive to all carriers, mandating strict adherence to the newly prescribed fare caps. It added that these caps will remain in force until the situation fully stabilises.
Why the new directive? MoCA statement
The order is meant to keep ticket prices under control and stop airlines from taking advantage of passengers during a difficult time. It aims to protect people who need to travel urgently, such as older people, students, and those who are sick. The Ministry said it will keep checking ticket prices through real-time data and by working with airlines and online travel sites. It also said that if airlines break these rules, the government will take quick action for the public’s benefit.
