New Delhi: A close aide of politician-turned-mafia Atiq Ahmed, Sharpshooter Abdul Kavi, surrendered himself in the Lucknow CBI court. Kavi was absconded after being accused in the 2005 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal murder case.
A CBI lawyer informed that Kavi has been sent to jail in 14-day judicial custody. The police had announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on him.
Additional Director General (DG), Prayagraj zone, Bhanu Bhaskar, said, “It has been a sustained investigation of over 35 days in which Kavi was chased across the country by multiple teams,” quoted the news agency IANS.
“Succumbing to the pressure, he surrendered. No photo of the accused was available with any national or state agencies. But the police tried and brought it into public light. As many as 15 teams were conducting searches in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Raipur, Satna, Katni, Jabalpur, Prayagraj, Jalaun, Chitrakoot, Shravasti, Meerut, Saharanpur,” added Bhaskar.

The police official further informed that 19 family members of Kavi including his siblings were arrested. As many as 28 arms licences of his relatives were cancelled in the past month.
The CBI teams had compiled property records of the fugitive to attach his assets earlier. A dossier was prepared against Kavi as he was accused in as many as four cases including two murders, one attempt to murder and one Explosive Act case.

The Kaushambi police had arrested Kavi’s elder brotehr Abdul Qadir allegedly for keeping illegal firearms in his house. During a raid at Qadir’s house, the police had confiscated a rifle, four country-made pistols, several live cartridges and two knives hidden in the walls.
