Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 100th Birth Anniversary: Today, December 25, 2024, observed as Good Governance Day every year marks the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime minister and visionary architect of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. His centenary celebrations began early Tuesday with the launch of the Atal Swasthya Mela in Lucknow, commemorating the beginning of a series of events to honour his legacy.
A man of the masses, firm in his political convictions, Atal Ji took oath as Prime Minister of India for the second time on October 13, 1999, at the head of the National Democratic Alliance. A veteran parliamentarian, widely remembered by millions for his iconic and fearless speeches, he was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha and twice to the Rajya Sabha.

Early Life, Entry Into Politics & Death
Vajpayee, who was born in Gwalior on December 25, 1924, entered into national politics during his student days when he joined the Quit India Movement in 1942. A student of political science and law, he pursued a journalistic career, which abruptly ended in 1951 after he joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (Forerunner of BJP).
Atal Ji, affectionately known as ‘a man of the people’ was conferred with India’s second civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan in 1992. He was an ardent champion of women’s empowerment and social equality who was named the ‘Best Parliamentarian’ in 1994. On August 16, 2018, we lost the BJP stalwart at the age of 93 due to prolonged illness.
