The flood situation in Assam worsened on Friday, causing the deaths of six people and affecting over 3.5 lakh residents across 11 districts. Incessant rainfall following Cyclone Remal disrupted road and rail communication, according to officials.
The floods, rain, and storms in Assam have caused the deaths of three people in Cachar, two in Hailakandi, and one in Karbi Anglong, bringing the total death toll in the state to 12 since May 28.
PM Narendra Modi has assured Assam of the Centre’s assistance in dealing with the situation, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. According to officials, the floods have affected a total of 3,49,045 people in the districts of Karbi Anglong, Dhemaji, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Hailakandi, Golaghat, West Karbi Anglong, and Dima Hasao. Cachar district is the worst hit, with 1,19,997 people affected.
The government is dealing with the Assam floods
Rescue teams evacuated 615 people. Swirling floodwaters damaged 11 roads and breached 3 embankments, while urban flooding occurred in Kamrup, Cachar, and Jorhat. In Barak Valley, rail and road communication have been severely disrupted due to the River Barak’s water flowing above the danger mark, inundating several areas of Silchar town, including the railway station in the Tarapur area. A North East Frontier Railway spokesperson said the flooding of the railway station led to the cancellation or short termination of train services to Silchar.
Authorities cancelled the Silchar-Guwahati Express and the Silchar-Rangiya Express on Friday and Saturday from both directions. Due to high water levels and speed restrictions between Jugijan and Jamunamukh stations in the Lumding division, six more trains were cancelled on Friday. Barak Valley’s three districts — Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj — along with Dima Hasao and Hojai, are among the worst-hit by the floods.
Officials reported that train services, canceled or short-terminated due to landslides along the Haflong-Badarpur rail route, have not yet been restored. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has arrived in Assam and other northeastern states ahead of schedule due to Cyclone Remal, according to the IMD. The IMD has warned of heavy rain in the districts of Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao, Dhubri, and South Salmara over the next two days.
