New Delhi: The Assam Police has arrested over 1,800 people allegedly for being involved in cases of child marriages and other crimes on women across the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday posted a tweet asserting that the state has no tolerance for violence against women.

“State wide arrests are presently underway against those violating provisions of Prohibhiton of Child Marriage Act . 1800 + have been arrested so far. I have asked Assam Police to act with a spirit of zero tolerance against the unpardonable and heinous crime on women,” said the CM through a Twitter post.

The massive crackdown was launched on Thursday after the Chief Minister instructed the police to take firm actions against the violators.

Charing a video conference with senior officials of the police department, the CM appealed to people to extend support and cooperate with us in our endeavour to rid the State of the evil practice.

CM Sarma also informed that at least 4,004 cases have been registered in the cases of child marriage.

The National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) stated that percentage of women aged between 20 and 24 married before the legal age of 18 in the state was 31.8 per cent, compared to the national figure of 23.3 per cent. The data was of between 2019 and 2020.

Keeping that in mind, the Assam cabinet approved a drive against ending the illegal practice of child marriage.
