The Assam government has decided not to issue new Aadhaar cards to people over 18 years of age in the state. The service will only be available to people from the SC/ST community and tea garden workers. The measure has been taken to keep a check on illegal infiltrators.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that people from other communities who do not have an Aadhaar card can apply for the same in the month of September.
Sarma posted on X, ” In Assam, barring a few sections of people, for whom we will be making an exception, everyone else has received an Aadhar Card. New Aadhar cards will only be issued by DCs in rarest of rare cases to ensure a robust mechanism to check applications by illegal infiltrators.”
