The media is often referred to as the fourth pillar of democracy, playing a crucial role in shaping public opinion, driving development, and holding power accountable. It has long been at the forefront in protecting people’s interests and promoting transparency.
National Press Day Celebration
In honor of the important role of a free and responsible press in society, National Press Day is celebrated every year on November 16. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the National Press Day ceremony in 2024.
Media’s Role and Challenges
Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the significant role of media in society, noting that the perception of media has evolved over time. He highlighted that the biggest challenge for media today is to present accurate, fact-based news to the public. The media has fought long battles for press freedom—first during British rule and later during the Emergency of 1975.
The Growing Media Landscape in India
Vaishnaw mentioned that India has 35,000 daily newspapers and 1,000 registered news channels. News is now reaching millions of people through digital platforms, expanding the media’s reach.
Digital Media and the Challenge of Fake News
Vaishnaw acknowledged the rapid growth of digital media in India but also expressed concern over the spread of misleading and fake news, which pose significant threats to society and the nation. He stressed that the media’s job is to educate people and raise awareness.
