Arvind Kejriwal, national convener of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lashed out at Union Home Minister Amit Shah while accusing him of turning National Capital into “Gangster and extortion capital” of India.
Addressing the media in Delhi, Kejriwal criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital, pointing to a significant rise in gang violence, extortion calls to businesses, and frequent shootings over the past one to two years.
He drew comparisons to Mumbai’s underworld dominance in the 1990s, stating, “In the 1990s, Mumbai was ruled by the underworld with open shootouts, and now Delhi is facing the same situation. Gangsters control Delhi, businessmen are receiving ransom calls, and shootings are becoming common.” said Kejriwal in a press conference.
Kejriwal also recounted a recent incident in Nangloi, where shots were fired at a local businessman, Roshan Lal, while he was opening his shop.

The AAP leader claimed that BJP supporters had prevented him from meeting the victim, further accusing the party of attempting to cover up the law and order crisis. “Who is responsible for this? Amit Shah is responsible for Delhi’s law and order. Under his watch, Delhi has become a gangster and extortion capital,” Kejriwal stated.
He called for improved law enforcement to ensure the safety of the public and businesses, noting that while his government has succeeded in areas like education, health, and electricity, the responsibility for law and order lies with the central government, which has failed to act. “People are afraid to step out of their homes, and extortion calls are becoming more frequent,” he added.
In response, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari dismissed Kejriwal’s claims, stating that the police had swiftly resolved the Nangloi shooting incident, which occurred two months ago. Tewari clarified that two individuals had been arrested within a day of the incident, and weapons had been recovered.
