Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced on Wednesday that the capital is gearing up for artificial rain between November 1 and November 15, a period when pollution levels are expected to peak. The city is also set to implement a 21-point action plan to fight air pollution during the winter months.

Artificial Rain Plans

The Delhi government has written to the Union Environment Minister, seeking permission to conduct artificial rain in early November, coinciding with the anticipated rise in pollution due to Diwali celebrations and stubble burning in neighboring states. “We want to prepare for artificial rains during the pollution peak, but we are still awaiting the Union Minister’s response,” Rai said.

Air Quality Improvement Since 2016

Rai highlighted that air pollution in Delhi has decreased by 34.6% between 2016 and 2023, largely due to afforestation efforts. “In the last four years, two crore trees have been planted in Delhi, which has contributed significantly to the reduction in pollution,” he said.

Additionally, a Special Task Force of 86 members, drawn from various departments including the environment and transport ministries, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the Public Works Department, will be established to ensure coordinated efforts.

Anti-Dust Campaign and Crackdown on Vehicle Pollution

From October 7, an anti-dust campaign will begin, with 85 machine sweepers and 200 mobile anti-smog guns deployed across all assembly constituencies. A team of 360 personnel will be tasked with checking pollution certificates for vehicles to ensure compliance.

Green War Room and Firecracker Ban

A Green War Room will be set up to tackle air pollution during the critical winter period. Additionally, a firecracker ban will be implemented, with the official notification expected soon.
