“We are looking into the sudden deaths of the people of age group 18 to 45 years with no reason in the post COVID era,” News18 quoted Dr Rajiv Bahl, director-general of ICMR as saying, on the sidelines of the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit (GCTM).

“We aim to comprehend the potential repercussions of the Covid-19 outbreak and its potential role in sudden deaths, if any,” he emphasized. The ICMR is actively investigating the unexpected fatalities of seemingly healthy individuals with no known underlying health issues.

The organization has examined 50 autopsies at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and plans to analyze 100 more in the coming months.

Dr. Bahl, a representative of ICMR, explained that the research aims to identify variations or discrepancies by comparing autopsy findings from recent years to pre-Covid years.

The objective is to identify potential physiological changes within bodies that might have contributed to sudden deaths, especially among young people. The study seeks patterns, such as increased instances of sudden heart failure or lung complications.

Another study, a case-control analysis, is leveraging data on sudden deaths in individuals aged 18 to 45 within the last year. The study draws information from 40 centers across India that have followed up with Covid patients for a year post-discharge. Researchers are interviewing families to uncover factors that could be linked to the deaths.

To create a comparative framework, the study is also engaging with living individuals in the same neighborhoods as those who died. These individuals have similar profiles, including age, gender, and residency. This approach is crucial for identifying potential risk factors associated with Covid-related deaths.

Researchers are conducting in-depth interviews with the control group to understand their lifestyle, diet, Covid history, vaccination status, and family medical background. This approach will help uncover potential risk factors that could have contributed to death after contracting Covid.

Dr. Bahl underscored the importance of understanding the broader context, including lifestyle changes and dietary shifts brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The research aims to shed light on the multifaceted factors that may be influencing sudden deaths and to establish associations that could aid in preventing such incidents in the future.
