Manohar Parrikar, India’s former Defence Minister, is being remembered at this crucial juncture as the country navigates a challenging phase marked by significant moves against Pakistan. Among them, Manohar Parrikar deserves special mention for his key role in procuring the S-400 Triumf missile defence system developed by Russia.

Manohar Parrikar also served as the Chief Minister of Goa. His integrity, dedication, and outstanding contribution to public service earned him the Padma Bhushan in 2020, India’s third-highest civilian award. As a defence minister, he played a crucial role in bringing major defence procurements, including the S-400 missile system and Rafale fighter jets, significantly strengthening India’s defense capabilities.

Shri Manohar Parrikar once quoted- “I don’t believe in speaking too much. I believe in doing things.”

He passed away at the age of 63 on March 17, 2019, at his residence in Panaji, Goa. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for a long time and underwent treatment in the United States, Delhi, and Mumbai before returning to Goa in October 2018.

Manohar Parrikar was credited for being a logical decision-maker. His hands-on approach and engineering background helped him modernise India’s armed forces during a high-stake period. He was a leader who dared to maintain transparency and defend the strategic necessity of the Rafale deal amid political scrutiny, ultimately leading to India signing an agreement for 36 Rafale jets.

S-400 Missile System Deal:

As a Defence Minister, he initiated discussions with Russia regarding the S-400 missile system, which is an advanced surface-to-air defence missile, capable of targeting aerial threat with a range of up to 400 kilometres. It also include fighter jets, and unmanned aerial vehicles. His strategic moves helped him in playing a crucial role in strengthening India’s ability to counter threats rising especially from Pakistan and China.

The urgent need to prioritise India’s Defence system contributed towards the formation of long term diplomatic and strategic partnership.
