The CBI had earlier on October 14 challenged the former Maharashtra Home Minister’s bail application. Anil Deshmukh’s attorney will now argue on October 18 in response to the CBI’s response to the bail petition that Deshmukh had submitted to the CBI court.
He has been charged with paying police officers in Mumbai to extort Rs 100 crores from bar owners each month.
On October 11, the Supreme Court declined to revoke the former home minister’s bail in the money laundering case brought by the Enforcement Directorate against him (ED).
A bench presided over by Justice DY Chandrachud declined to overturn the decision of the Bombay High Court to release Deshmukh on bail.
Deshmukh, who was detained in connection with a money laundering investigation, was granted bail by the Bombay High Court, but the Enforcement Directorate has appealed this decision to the Supreme Court.
In a money laundering case that the ED is looking into, Deshmukh was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on October 4.
Deshmukh is still being held in judicial custody at Arthur Road Prison while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into a corruption case involving him.
Deshmukh is now being held in judicial prison after being detained by the ED in November 2021.
The ED claims that Deshmukh abused his authority as the state’s home minister by using some police officials to collect Rs 4.70 crore from several Mumbai bars.
