Today, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated a trial run of a seaplane service, launching the first demonstration flight from Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada to Srisailam in Nandyal district. This initiative aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a leader in India’s water-based aviation sector. Alongside Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu and other dignitaries also boarded the flight, marking a significant step in the state’s tourism development.
A New Era for Tourism and Economic Growth
While launching the trial, CM Naidu expressed his enthusiasm for this project, emphasizing the tourism sector’s potential to drive economic growth. “This is a boom for tourism. The future is only for tourism. It will create jobs, wealth, and new experiences for people. We’re giving tourism an industrial status,” he said. Naidu also mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s support for this venture, highlighting that seaplane operations require much less infrastructure than traditional airports, making them an affordable option.
Seaplanes: Expanding Andhra Pradesh’s Aviation Network
Seaplanes provide a unique way to connect picturesque and remote regions, and Andhra Pradesh aims to lead the way in this area. Ram Mohan Naidu noted that this project opens a new chapter for Andhra Pradesh and potentially for India as well. Although previous seaplane trials were paused due to the pandemic, renewed efforts led by CM Naidu are now bringing this vision to life.
Key Locations Identified for Seaplane Services
The state government has identified eight locations to facilitate seaplane operations and boost tourism in areas with scenic landscapes and strategic importance:
- Prakasam Barrage (Vijayawada)
- Araku
- Lambasingi
- Rushikonda
- Kakinada
- Konaseema
- Srisailam
- Tirupati
These sites offer opportunities to develop water aerodromes, which require fewer resources and shorter development times compared to traditional airports, thereby enhancing air connectivity in regions that lack standard runway facilities.
