Punjab police on Monday morning arrested one of the two accused following an encounter who allegedly carried out a grenade attack in the Amritsar Temple on Friday night.
Police said on Monday when the police team tried to stop a suspicious motorcycle-borne two men identified as Gursidak and Vishal, they tried to escape and left the motorcycle. When the police team chased them, they fired at the police, and Constable Gurpreet Singh suffered a bullet injury to his arm. Another bullet hit Amolak Singh while the third hit the police bike.
“Inspector Vinod Kumar fired in self-defence from his pistol, which injured the accused Gursidak. Other accused managed to flee from the spot,” said a senior police officer as quoted by HT.
Police rushed the injured suspect to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries while police officers are undergoing treatment.
Notably, on Friday night, two masked men on a motorcycle lobbed a grenade at Amritsar’s Thakurdwara Temple, according to CCTV evidence. GPS Bhullar, the Amritsar commissioner at the time, stated he suspected Pakistan’s ISI was involved in the explosion. He claimed that they attract youth into causing unrest in Punjab.
“We got information at 2 am and rushed to the spot right away. A forensic team was called… We checked the CCTV and spoke to the nearby people. The thing is that Pakistan’s ISI lures our youth into creating disturbances in Punjab,” Bhullar said to the media.
“Ever since Aam Aadmi Party’s government came to power, law and order situation has become terrible… All these grenade attacks have happened in a chained way, with some happening on police stations as well… Whereas, the police is busy with the protection of Arvind Kejriwal,” he was quoted by ANI as saying.
