Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting on Monday to address the deteriorating law and order situation in Manipur. This marked his second consecutive day of deliberations on the state’s security concerns amid escalating violence.
Additional Security Forces Deployed
In response to the rising tensions, the Home Ministry has intensified its security measures by dispatching an additional 50 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to Manipur. This supplements the earlier deployment of 20 companies, bringing the total to 70 CAPF units in the state.
Violence and Protests
The unrest escalated after six bodies were found in Jiribam district on November 16, following reports of their kidnapping by suspected militants. Fresh protests erupted across the state, prompting the imposition of curfews in Imphal West and Imphal East and the suspension of internet services in seven districts.
On Sunday, a 20-year-old was killed in Jiribam when security forces opened fire to control a crowd. The violence extended to arson as mobs ransacked and set fire to furniture and property from local BJP and Congress offices in the same district.

Political Fallout
In the wake of the violence, the National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew its support for the BJP-led Manipur government, citing its inability to restore peace in the state. This development adds political uncertainty to an already volatile situation.
NIA Takes Over Key Cases
The Union Home Ministry has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over three high-profile cases linked to the violence:
1. Gunfight in Jiribam District: A clash between the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Kuki insurgents resulted in the deaths of 11 militants.
2. Kidnapping and Murder Case: The anti-terror agency is now investigating the abduction and killing of six individuals.
Situation Remains Tense
As the Centre steps up its efforts to restore order, the situation in Manipur remains precarious, with curfews, protests, and ongoing investigations adding to the complexity of the crisis. The Home Ministry’s response underscores the gravity of the situation and the challenges ahead in restoring peace to the region.
