India has withdrawn its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, along with other senior diplomats, in a sharp escalation of the diplomatic row between the two nations. The decision comes in the wake of Canada naming Verma and other Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” in its investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Safety Concerns for Diplomats
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement citing concerns over the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada. It expressed deep mistrust in the Trudeau government’s ability to protect them in an “atmosphere of extremism and violence.” The statement said, “We have no faith in the current Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats.”

India’s Strong Response to Canada’s Allegations
In addition to recalling its diplomats, the Indian government summoned Stewart Wheeler, Canada’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi, to convey that the targeting of Indian diplomats was unacceptable. India also indicated it reserves the right to take further steps against Canada for its alleged support of extremism and separatism.
Canadian Diplomat’s Reaction
After leaving the meeting, Wheeler reiterated that India must follow through on its promises in light of Ottawa’s allegations, underscoring the continued strain in relations between the two countries. With both nations standing firm on their positions, the diplomatic rift continues to deepen.
