Amethi Murder Case: CM Yogi Adityanath Calls Killings ‘Unforgivable,’ Vows Strict Action Against Perpetrators

Authorities believe the attack may be revenge for a complaint the family filed under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

A very dreadful incident occurred in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday in which an infant aged just one year, a six-year-old girl, and the rest two others from that family were brutally shot dead by some unidentified people at their house. The attack happened at about 7:15 pm. Sunil (35), a teacher in a government school, his wife Poonam (32), and their two small daughters have been confirmed as the victims of the attack. SC/ST Case Suspected

According to Amethi Superintendent of Police (SP) Anoop Kumar Singh, preliminary investigation suggests the murder could be in retaliation against a complaint filed by the family against a local man Chandan Verma. The complaint, lodged under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 also alleged eve-teasing. The police are investigating if the earlier complaint had triggered the deadly attack. Nine shells and a live cartridge were found at the crime scene, indicating a deliberate and gruesome attack.

The Authorities Respond Promptly

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also targeted the incident of killings and termed it “unforgivable”. He said that stern action would be taken against culprits. He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and said that no leniency would be shown to the guilty. The Chief Minister, posting on social media platform X, expressed sorrow over the incident and has wished that the Uttar Pradesh government supports the bereaved family.

Political Leaders React

The brutal killings have attracted so much attention that opposition leader and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav even posted a video of the incident on social media. In a cryptic message, Yadav asked, “Is anybody there?”. Congress leader and former Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi was surprised and reportedly spoke with Amethi MP Kishori Lal Sharma, who is currently at the crime scene to take stock of the situation.

Ongoing Probe

SP Anoop Singh stated that the forensic teams, dog squads and the local police forces are being used for collecting evidence. The probe is under the supervision of senior officers ADG Lucknow Zone SB Shiradkar and IG Faizabad Range Praveen Kumar. The police have roped in the Special Task Force (STF) to conduct a comprehensive probe from all sides.
