About Amarnath Cave

The world famous shrine of Amarnath ji is situated about 48 Kms. from Pahalgam and attracts devotees from all over India. It is located in the Anantnag district at an altitude of about 13,000 ft. from the sea level. It is considered one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. The journey is dedicated to Lord Shiva and known for naturally occurring ice lingam that represents the deity. The ice pillar present inside the cave is also called ice lingham, the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. Two smaller ice stalagmite represent Parvati, his wife, and Ganesha, his son. This visual holds significant meaning for Shiva Devotees.

Historical and Cultural Significance Of Amarnath Yatra

The Amarnath Cave has special significance in the Hindu religion. This is the Cave which was chosen by Lord Shiva for narrating the secrets of immortality and creation of Universe to Goddess Parvati. It has been a central pilgrimage site for Hindus for centuries.

Notably, Hindu pilgrims believe that the height of the lingam increases and decreases with the phases of the moon. Thousands of Hindus go on a pilgrimage up to the cave in the month of Shravan (on the full moon in August). It is believed that at this time the lingam reaches its biggest size.

Description Of The Holy Cave

The cave is quite enormous. Its entrance is about forty yards horizontally and in height it is about 75 feet and is sloping 80 feet deep down inside the mountain. Inside the cave is an ice-lingam of about five feet high and at the top it forms a cone.

Story Behind The Cave

It is believed that centuries ago Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva to let her know why and when he started wearing the beads of heads. To which, Shiva replied whenever you are born I add one more head in my beads Maa Parvati then said, “My Lord, my body is destroyed every time and I die again and again, but you are Immortal. Please let me know the secret of this.” Lord Shiva then said that it is due to Amar Katha.

Maa Parvati then insisted that she may be told that secret (Amar Katha). Lord Shiva continued postponing this for a long time. On Maa Parvati’s continuous demand, he made up his mind to tell the immortal secret. For this, he started to look for a place where no living being could listen it. He then chose Amarnath Cave and it became a history.

For all these reasons, the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage is considered one of the most important pilgrimages that one should undertake in their lifetime. The Yatra holds cultural and spiritual importance, symbolising faith, devotion, and the connection between humanity and the divine. It offers peace, spirituality and brings you closer to the divine power.
