Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will resign as the MLA for the Karhal assembly seat after winning the Lok Sabha elections in Kannauj. By resigning, the SP Chief will also step down from his role as Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
The party has not yet decided who will replace the SP Chief as the LoP in the UP state assembly. Akhilesh is expected to choose Shivpal Yadav for the role, given his status as one of the party’s senior leaders.
The SP Chief reclaimed the Yadav family stronghold of Kannauj by winning the Lok Sabha seat with 6,42,292 votes, defeating sitting BJP MP Subrat Pathak by over 1 lakh votes. Initially, Tej Pratap Yadav was nominated to contest the Kannauj seat, but the party later changed the decision due to dissatisfaction among party workers who preferred the SP Chief as the candidate.
