Air India Crash: DNA Of 125 Victims Matched, Mortal Remains Of 83 Handed Over To Families

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed that the mortal remains of 83 deceased have been handed over to their families.

Air India Crash: Amid the ongoing investigations into the Air India plane crash, DNA samples of 125 victims who died in the tragedy have been successfully matched. Earlier on Monday, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed that the mortal remains of 83 deceased have been handed over to their families. Meanwhile, the families of 124 victims had been reached out.

The Minister arrived at the DNA testing facility in Gandhinagar on June 18. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) teams are conducting the tests. Meanwhile, Sanghavi praised their tireless efforts around the clock. Till 10:58 pm on Monday, the DNA of 131 patients was matched, and shortly after, six more DNA certificates were meant to be sent to the Civil Hospital.

The Home Minister added that senior police officials, along with an FSL team, were monitoring the process till late at night. He noted that the teams had worked relentlessly over the past three days to ensure that mortal remains were handed over to the respective families at the earliest.

The London-bound Air India plane on Thursday, June 12, crashed in the Meghani Nagar area near Ahmedabad airport. Visuals from the crash site showed thick columns of smoke rising from the residential area. The plane involved, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had 230 passengers and 12 crew members onboard and was en route to London. Out of 242, all onboard except one were killed shortly after the aircraft took off at the Ahmedabad airport.
