An Air India plane with 242 passengers onboard crashed in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was on board the London-bound flight that crashed in the Meghani Nagar area on Thursday.

Air India flight AI171 departed from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft.
Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He has asked them to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA), Ahmedabad, was currently not operational. All flight operations were temporarily suspended until further notice.
Rescue and relief operations were underway at the site of the Air India plane crash. A green corridor was being established to transport injured passengers to hospitals for treatment.

A senior police officer said, “As per preliminary information, a London-bound Air India flight has crashed at the doctors’ hostel. Within 2-3 minutes, police and other agencies reached the spot. Almost 70-80 % of the area has been cleared. All agencies are working here.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Home Minister and the Police Commissioner regarding the plane crash. He also assured to provide Central government assistance.
The office of union Civil Aviation Minister said, “Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu, who was in Vijayawada, rushed to Ahmedabad immediately upon receiving news of the flight crash. He is in constant contact with senior officials from DGCA, AAI, NDRF, and the Gujarat State administration to ensure swift, coordinated response and support. Rescue and medical teams are on site.”
The civil aviation minister posted on X, “Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families.”
