New Delhi: Following a preliminary investigation by Police, which found that Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry and a co-passenger, who were killed in a car crash on Sunday, were not wearing seat belts, industrialist Anand Mahindra today urged the public to wear seatbelts.

In a tweet, Mahindra pledged to wear his seat belt “even when in the rear seat of the car” and asked others to do the same.

“I resolve to always wear my seat belt even when in the rear seat of the car. And I urge all of you to take that pledge too. We all owe it to our families,” Anand Mahindra, the chairman of the Mahindra Group, wrote on Twitter.

The 54-year-old and one of the co-passenger were killed in a car crash on Sunday after the car hit a road divider on a bridge in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. The accident happened at around 2:30 pm when Mistry was returning to Mumbai from Ahmedabad.

A preliminary probe has found that none of the passengers were wearing seat belts and over-speeding and the error of judgment by the driver has been highlighted as the cause of the accident by the police.

A police officer on Sunday night said that “While analysing the CCTV footage captured at the Charoti check post, Palghar Police found that the car had crossed the check post around 2.21 pm and the accident occurred 20 km ahead (in the direction of Mumbai).”

“Hard to digest this news,” Mahindra wrote paying tribute to Cyrus Mistry. “I got to know Cyrus well during his all-too-brief tenure as the head of the House of Tata. I was convinced he was destined for greatness. If life had other plans for him, so be it, but life itself should not have been snatched away from him. Om Shanti,” he said.

Mistry is survived by his wife Rohiqa and two sons, Firoz and Zahan.
