BJP’s Ramdular Gond, the MLA from Duddhi in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, has been handed a 25-year prison sentence and a Rs 10 lakh fine by the MP-MLA Court for raping a teenage girl. The entire fine amount will be awarded to the victim. The verdict comes after an arduous eight-year legal battle since the case was filed at Myorpur police station in November 2014.
Judge Ehsanullah Khan of the MP-MLA Court issued the stringent sentence, directing the full fine to be paid to the victim. The ruling has dealt a severe blow to the BJP and the MLA’s supporters, spelling likely legislative loss for Ramdular Gond following this verdict. The MLA’s legal representative has stated intentions to contest the decision in the high court.
On December 12, the MP-MLA Court had already declared BJP MLA Ramdular Gond guilty in the case of the teenage girl’s rape. Following Tuesday’s hearing, Judge Ehsanullah Khan set December 15 as the date for the sentencing.
Expressing joy over the MLA’s conviction, the victim’s brother conveyed his contentment with the court’s decision. He expressed relief after nine years of struggle, finally achieving justice. Notably, the case was filed against Ramdular Gond based on the victim’s brother’s complaint nearly a decade ago.
