In a significant development, over 60 doctors from Kolkata’s Calcutta Medical College resigned on Wednesday, following the resignation of 50 senior doctors from RG Kar Medical College the day before. This mass resignation is in support of junior doctors who have been protesting the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor in August.
Resignation in Solidarity
On Tuesday, senior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital convened a meeting with heads of various departments before collectively deciding to step down. Their move was to express solidarity with their colleagues who are on a hunger strike, demanding justice for the deceased.
Hunger Strikes and Protests
The wave of resignations follows an indefinite hunger strike led by seven junior doctors, joined by their peers across other medical colleges in West Bengal. Symbolic protests, such as a 12-hour fast, have also been observed by medical professionals throughout the state.

Key figures among the protesting doctors include Snigdha Hazra, Tanaya Panja, and Anustup Mukhopadhyay from Kolkata Medical College, as well as Arnab Mukhopadhyay, Pulastha Acharya, and Sayantani Ghosh Hazra from other institutions.
Junior Doctors Continue Protests
Junior doctors from multiple institutions, including RG Kar and Coochbehar Medical Colleges, have been on hunger strike for several consecutive days, demanding justice and raising their voices against the tragic death of their colleague. Their ‘fast-unto-death’ protest continues to garner support from both senior and junior doctors across the state.
