It was an unbelievable incident after the Colaba police arrested a man 48 years later, as he was wanted in connection with an attempt-to-murder case of his girlfriend dating back to 1977.
According to IANS, the accused has been identified as Chandrashekhar Madhukar Kalekar. He was arrested from his home in Ratnagiri’s Dapoli. The man was 23 when he allegedly committed the offence.
As per the police, the victim was attacked by Kalekar with a knife. He was arrested at the time but later got bail and never turned up in court for the hearing.
A senior police officer from Colaba police said that they had been looking for him for the last several decades. He did not appear in court proceedings and was later declared a proclaimed offender.
The Colaba police started a fresh search six months ago and tried to connect the dots in the case. At that time, he was living in Haji Kasam Chawl in Lalbaug. When the police reached the place, it had been replaced by a new building. The police made a mammoth effort to trace his address by searching voter lists and public records.
The police then started checking court records and found that a case had been registered against him in connection with injuring a man in a road rage incident in Dapoli.
A police team reached the address mentioned in the road rage case and, surprisingly, he was present at home. He initially failed to recollect the incident, but when the cops interrogated him, he confessed to the crime.
Later, he was produced in court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
