Parliament witnessed a fiery exchange and a tit-for-tat between ruling party MPs and the opposition bloc during a debate on Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam terror attack. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on the government over its handling of the incident, saying, “No matter how many operations you conduct, you cannot hide the truth.”
Attacking the Union home minister, she said, “The home minister stated that Pakistan had no choice but to seek refuge. The question is—why did you grant them refuge? Terrorists come to our country, kill people, and you are providing them shelter. Why have you not addressed this in any of your speeches?”
She accused the government of using diversionary tactics: “As soon as the issue of refuge was raised, the Home Minister delved into history—from Nehru ji, Indira ji, to even my mother’s tears. But he did not answer the question of why there was a ceasefire, why the war was halted.”Gandhi also targeted the government for its lack of accountability: “This government always tries to escape questions. They have no sense of responsibility towards the citizens of the nation. The truth is that they have no place for the public in their heart. For them, everything is politics, publicity…”
She was responding to remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had referred to former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, as well as to Sonia Gandhi’s emotional pain.
“I Know The pain Of Those 26 People”
“The Home Minister spoke about my grandmother Indira Gandhi and my mother’s tears. Yes, my mother cried when her husband was martyred by terrorists. He was only 44 years old. Today, if I am standing here and talking about those 26 people, I am doing this because I know their pain,” Priyanka said
The Wayanad MP also questioned the lack of preventive measures at Baisaran Valley, a well-known tourist destination, despite its vulnerability. “Did the government not know that thousands of tourists visit the area? Why was there no security? Why were they left to God’s mercy?” she asked. She also raised concerns about intelligence failures.
What Amit Shah Said
During a Lok Sabha debate on “India’s resolute and triumphant Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack,” Home Minister Amit Shah sharply criticised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, blaming him for the persistent issue of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Shah pointed to Nehru’s 1948 ceasefire decision as the root cause of the region’s ongoing status.
“Today, PoK exists only because of Jawaharlal Nehru… In 1960, they gave 80% of the Indus waters to Pakistan… In 1971, during the Simla Agreement, they (Congress) forgot to ask about PoK. If they had taken PoK then, we would not have to carry out attacks on camps there now…” Amit Shah said in the Parliament.
“In 1948, the Indian Armed Forces in were in decisive position to take back PoK, but then PM Nehru declared unilateral ceasefire,” the Home Minister said.
“During the 1962 war with China, then PM Nehru had bid goodbye to Assam in a speech on Akashvani,” he said.
