Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi on Tuesday announced that INS Aridaman, India’s third indigenously built nuclear ballistic submarine, will be commissioned ‘very soon.’ He shared the update on the upgraded Arihant-class submarine during a press conference.
In August 2024, INS Arighaat was commissioned into the Indian Navy in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and later in 2016, INS Arihant was also commissioned. The step is aimed at strengthening India’s nuclear triad and enhancing nuclear deterrence.
After INS Aridama’s commission, India to have…
INS Aridaman is the country’s 3rd indigenously built SSBN. It is a part of the Arihant-class nuclear submarines under the Strategic Forces Command. Once it is commissioned into the Navy, India will have a total of three operational ballistic missile submarines at sea for the very first time.
The upcoming Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear (SSBN), currently undergoing advanced trials, is engineered to carry more long-range nuclear-tipped missiles than INS Arihant and INS Arighaat.
Fourth SSBN currently under Construction
The greater version of the submarine enhances strike capability and survivability, two major components of India’s nuclear doctrine. According to reports, a fourth SSBN, which is currently in progress, will further boost India’s nuclear deterrent envelope, TOI reported in August. Both the upcoming submarines possess the capacity to load additional K-4 missiles because of their size.
