Police were notified of the incident at 12:17 a.m. (local time), while the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) was notified around 12:30 a.m. (local time). Fire and rescue crews arrived at the scene at 12:33 a.m. (local time), and the fire was completely extinguished by 4:34 a.m. (local time). The cause of the fire remains unknown. The fire killed 11 people, according to authorities. According to AVAS, eight of the deceased were Indian nationals, while one was from Bangladesh. So far, the nationalities of two other victims are unknown.

According to the report, the sources revealed that some of the deceased were trapped in their rooms and bathrooms.

Hawwa Afeef, IGMH Media Coordinator, told AVAS that one of the two people taken to the hospital for treatment had died. The second man is in critical condition and receiving medical attention. The hospital did not provide any additional information about the two men who were admitted.

The hospital confirmed that ten bodies were discovered in the structure. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is assisting victims and people evacuated from nearby buildings.

The NDMA has established a temporary centre at Maafannu Stadium to assist fire victims.

According to Ibrahim Rasheed, the Maldives National Defence Force’s (MNDF) Fire and Rescue Service Commander, the incident occurred in a building that housed a large number of Indian, Sri Lankan, and Bangladeshi migrant workers.

The bodies of ten of the eleven people who died were recovered from the building, according to MNDF. Ibrahim Rasheed went on to say that determining the deceased’s gender is difficult.
