A chilling incident that was concealed for about two months recently came to light and sent shockwaves across the nation. In a harrowing mishap that occurred in Muzaffarnagar, a 23-year-old woman, who was seven months pregnant at the time, was purportedly raped by her 50-year-old father-in-law.
On July 5, the victim was alone at home when her father-in-law barged in and committed the heinous crime. After raping her, he menaced to kill her if she reported the matter to the police. However, she found the courage to file a complaint against the perpetrator on September 7. She revealed that when she told her husband about the heartwrenching incident, he said, “Since his father had established a relationship, we cannot be together as now I am his father’s wife.” He also thrashed her and subsequently threw her out of the house.
She further asserted that she remained silent in order to protect her honour. She also revealed that she pleaded her husband to take her back as she was nowhere at fault. However, it made no difference as he refused her request. Consequently, she decided to take legal action against the accused.

Station House Officer (SHO) Raghavandra Yadav said that a case under sections 376 (rape)and 606 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC has been registered against the father-in-law. Additionally, her husband has been booked under section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt).
The heart-wrenching incident shows a similar pattern to the 2005’s Imrana case where a 28-year-old woman was raped by her father-in-law. Subsequently, she endured further injustice by the village panchayat as they decided that she had become her husband’s mother as a consequence of the event.
