The conversation comes amid heightened trade tariff tensions between India and the US, and the allegations that India’s oil purchases from Russia are indirectly empowering Moscow to maintain its stance against Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated and detailed how the US has been unfairly targeting and singling out India for purchasing oil from Russia in their reply, pointing out that China and several other nations follow similar strategies as well.

Furthermore, the official reply revealed that the United States itself has been importing certain metals such as palladium and uranium from Russia, along with Hexafluoride.
Before speaking with Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Modi had recently been in direct correspondence with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Upon his conversation with President Lula, he stated in an X post, “Had a good conversation with President Lula. Thanked him for making my visit to Brazil memorable and meaningful. We are committed to deepening our Strategic Partnership, including in trade, energy, tech, defence, health, and more. A strong, people-centric partnership between Global South nations benefits everyone.”
